A mobile-first concept that explores how digital tools and community-driven data can help women feel safer while moving through the city.

Context & Problem
Urban mobility is not neutral: many women face risks when traveling alone. Recent surveys show that 63.6% of women have experienced some form of violence in public transport, and only 18% always feel safe. This project aims to design a digital experience that helps women move more safely and confidently in the city.

Process
Research
- Online surveys with 50+ participants to understand behaviors and fears
- In-depth interviews with women who regularly use public transport
- Benchmarking mobility and safety apps
Synthesis & Insights
- Created proto-personas and journey maps
- Identified critical needs: visibility of safe routes, quick communication with trusted contacts, and arrival alerts
Ideation & Design
- Wireframes of key flows and interactive prototypes in Figma
- Focused on accessibility and visual clarity, prioritizing safety alerts and route tracking features
Validation
- Usability testing with 5 participants to evaluate flow comprehension and feature usefulness
- Iterative adjustments based on feedback: simplified notifications and improved visual hierarchy of alerts
Design Principles
Safety & Trust
Interfaces that convey calm and control.
Simplicity
Fast and clear flows for stressful situations.
Accessibility
Appropriate colors, typography, and contrast for readability.
Results / Impact
While this is a conceptual project, usability tests showed clear validation of the design approach.
- 100% of participants understood how to use alerts and route tracking
- Positive feedback on feeling more in control and secure
- Clear insights for future iterations, including community integration and recommended routes
Reflection & Learnings
- —Validated the importance of prioritizing critical needs over secondary features
- —Learned to balance quantitative and qualitative evidence for informed design decisions
- —Reinforced the need to create inclusive solutions centered on real user experiences
